Most nut butters look the same on the shelf, but the composition can vary a lot. Here's a short checklist to run through before your next purchase.

1. How many ingredients? Quality nut butter usually has 1-4 ingredients — nuts, sometimes salt, honey or coconut. If the label lists 10+ ingredients, you're likely looking at a heavily processed product.

2. Is there palm oil? Palm oil is often added to "fix" the texture and prevent natural oil separation — but that's an artificial shortcut. In real nut butter, natural oil separation is normal and doesn't need palm oil to fix it.

3. Is there added sugar? Check whether "sugar," "glucose syrup" or similar appears in the ingredient list. If you want a sweeter taste, natural honey is a much cleaner alternative.

4. Where do the nuts come from? Origin affects both flavor and quality — for example, Argentine high-oleic peanuts are known for their distinctive taste and a better fat profile.

5. Is there HACCP or similar certification? In a B2B or export context, this shows the manufacturer has a controlled, documented process — not just "a good recipe."
